Glossary of Terms

Here at Denbigh Army Surplus we use acronyms and abbreviations all day long, but it dawned on us that some of our customers may not be used to all Military terms, so we're put together this glossary of terms.

Army Surplus

Clothing, Equipment or Machinery that is no longer required by the MOD. These items can vary in condition from Brand New through to complete Scrap. Although the majority comes from the British Army, some RAF and Royal Navy items are also available.

Bergen

A Bergen is a Brish Army Issue Rucksack. The Infantry Bergen has 100 Litres capacity with the option of adding 2 10 Litre Rocket Pouches. 1 on either side. The All Ars or Other Arms Bergen is smaller in design, but does have the facility to attach Rocket Pouches.

Bivi Bag

Or Bivy are tubular outer for your Sleeping Bag. This Bivi bag design allows you to sleep outside without the need for a tent. Standard Bivi Bags have a drawsring hood, but more sophisticateds models will have a single pole that will keep the bag away from you face.
The British Army Bivi bags are made from an MVP material very similar if not identical to the waterproof material Gore-Tex.

DPM

Distruptive Patterned Material is a term used to describe camouflage.

Gore-Tex

Gore-tex is 100% Waterproof and 100% Breatheable material used to make Trousers, Jackets, Sock, Gloves, Mitts and Bivi Bags. Please note that none of the British forces use brand names on their items.

IRR

Infra-Red Resistant material helps soldiers hide from Infra-Red cameras, distorting their profile/signature to the enemy.

Kevlar

Kevlar is the registered trademark for a light, strong para-aramid synthetic fiber, related to other aramids such as Nomex and Technora. Developed at DuPont in 1965 by Stephanie Kwolek and Roberto Berendt, it was first commercially used in the early 1970s as a replacement for steel in racing tires. Kevlar has strong, flexible and lightweight properties that make it the perfect and preferred material in Bullet and Stab Proof Vests

Norgy

The Norweigen Shirt is a vert comfortable long sleeved base layer that is popular with soldiers and civilians alike. Typically in a light green/brown colour i has a high, zipped, neck that can be rolled into a turtle neck.
We have a number of Navy Norweigens that are Flame Retardant too.

MOD

Military of Defence

MVP

Moisture Vapour Permeable is the Term used to describe items made out of 100% Breatheable and %100 Waterproof Items. The popular Civilian term used is GORE-TEX, although no Genuine British Issue item will ever have a Brand Name on it's label.

NATO

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is an allience of 26 countries from North America and Europe commited to fulfilling the goals of the North Atlantic and was signed on 4th April 1949.

NSN

A NATO Stock Number is assigned to every item of Clothing, Equipment or Machinery issued within NATO. This 13 digit string identifies the NATO Supply Clasification and NATO Code for National Codification Bureau (or Country) -99- identifies any British NATO item.

PLCE

Personal Load Carrying Equipment. Often used when refering to Webbing and Rucksacks.

RAF

Royal Air Force

Rocket Pouch

Also known as the Bergen Side Pockets, these are 10 Litre Cordura Pockets that Clip and Zip on to the Issued Bergens. They can alos, be used with a specially adapted Yoke to make a Day Sack.

Webbing

A modular system used by a soldier for storing and carrying equipment, food and ammunition. Made from a Yoke and Belt, pouches can be clipped and attached in a configuration that best suits that particular soldier. The most recent British Design is made from Woodland Camouflage DPM Cordura that is IRR.
